Struggled with planting bulbs this year through my mossy wildlife friendly grass, so took advantage of discount to invest in one of these for next year. What a great buy! The diameter is less than I was expecting, but it's ideal nevertheless. Very sharp edge cuts out a neat cylinder to whatever depth you need, including tulip bulbs. Also tried it in a border, and after a few practice attempts managed to cut out a neat cylinder without the sides falling in. It can get caught up on stones but it tends to chip them away, so will probably need sharpening at some point in its life. It's also a thing of great beauty, sort of Arts and Crafts style. I've already oiled the wood, which gives it real heirloom status. Brilliant.
I'm so pleased I bought this tool. It's expensive, but definitely worth the money! I was worried it wouldn't work on our heavy clay soil, but it's doing the job brilliantly. I have already planted over 100 bulbs into our lawn with it. So much easier than using a standard hand bulb planter.
